I don’t really have time to write a full post (I’m supposed to be on my way to work in less than five), but I wanted to tell you about the half. One of the elders’ wives at church is recently retired. She is not the type of woman to twiddle her thumbs, so you can imagine she’s not enthused about sitting at home watching TV. She’s bored out of her brain, just a few months in.
She told me that she always wanted to do a marathon once in her life. She is not a runner; it’s a bucket list thing. We live in the Greater Orlando area, where the Disney Marathon and Princess Half Marathon are held each year. The thing about the Disney events, if you’re not familiar, is that they welcome participants at all levels. You can walk a half or full marathon, if you have eight hours or so. They have characters cheering you on all along the course. It’s a really fun time, and not necessarily a “runner’s race.” I think it would be the perfect place to “run” a first half or full marathon, and so does she.
Of course, she doesn’t want to train and sign up when we’re ready; she wants to sign up for the next race– Jan or Feb. Keep in mind neither of us has run so much as a 5K, so this should be interesting. I plan to try a 5K or two before hand and find some couch to half marathon program (if such a one exists), but we will probably walk a lot more than competitive me will allow myself to be happy with. I see the possibility for injury in my future.
But we still have time to get on a good training plan, right? Someone tell me we do, and that signing up won’t be the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.
What was your first race? Your first half? Have you done any of the Disney races? What advice do you have for two newbies–one senior citizen and one (very old) in her latter twenties?
